ANNOUNCEMENTS

IDE Challenge 2012

20 April 2012

On 16 March 2012, the Science department sent two teams (named Alpha and Beta) to participate in the Innovation, Design & Engineering (IDE) 2012 Challenge, jointly organized by Nullspace Science. We are thrilled to announce that our Alpha and Beta teams were awarded 3rd and 5th placings respectively, beating teams from schools like National Junior College, School of Science and Technology, Bukit Panjang Government High and Anglican High School.

Team Alpha (3rd Prize Winners) comprises:

Team Beta (5th placing) comprises:

Joyce Sng (3E1)

Kenny Sung Yun Lai (3E1)

Tan Hui Yi  (2E2)

Desmond Lim Zong Wei (3E1)

Muhammad Syafaat Bin Hamim (2E1)

Sim Wee Kang (2E1)

The IDE Challenge for this year was to build an all-straws structure to support unopened tin cans.  It was a great challenge because no tapes or pins could be used to secure the different parts of the structure, the maximum base area allowed was only 15cm by 15cm and the first can had to be placed at least 41cm above ground to qualify for the maximum point. Competitors were allowed to practice before the competition, but had to build the structure from scratch on the actual day of competition, within four hours and present their ideas to a judging panel on stage. Both teams Alpha and Beta spent part of their March school holidays preparing for the IDE challenge. Not only was it a test of their engineering skills and how well they could apply their physics concepts to build a strong and stable structure, it was also a test of their perseverance as they had to think of ways to strengthen the structure each time it collapsed during the cans test. Our ESSS teams faced stiff competition but overcame the adversities with their focus, discipline and resilience, and deserve the recognition and achievement in the IDE Challenge 2012. Well done, teams Alpha and Beta!

The teachers-in-charge, Mdm Munirah Shaik Kadir and Mr Hong Ching Chong would like to thank the school leaders, Mrs Jalil-Ong Suat Eng, Mrs Mohinder Singh and Mr Dominic Lim, as well as our Science HOD, Ms Sakinah Mohamed Sarip, for their support.

ESSS Floorball ‘B’ Division Girls (2012) with the principal,Mrs Jalil, and the teachers-in-charge, Miss Lim Ting Fang and Mdm Munirah Shaik Kadir

Our batch of 'B'Division girls inaugurated their strife for excellence since they commenced as pioneers three years ago in 2010. When the Floorball CCA was first set up three years ago, the above-mentioned girls were few of the many students turned up for the selections to join the team. Then, in the ‘C’ Division, the girls’ performance in their first tournament was average in 2010.  However, with a greater resolve, more experience, and consistent training with each game that they played in, the girls emerged stronger and better skilled progressively. In the following year in 2011, they finished their season as one of the top 10 teams in the National Inter-School Floorball Championships 2011. This year, we are very heartened to see the efforts and determination pay off this year despite being the underdogs amongst the other seeded teams which also made it to the semi-finals.  The girls finished as 4th in placing in the National Inter-School Floorball Championships 2012, their best performance yet.

The teachers-in-charge,Miss Lim Ting Fang and Mdm Munirah Shaik Kadir would like to thank the school leaders, Mrs Jalil-Ong Suat Eng, Mrs Mohinder Singh and Mr Dominic Lim for their time and support, and for even taking time to cheer the team on in their semi-finals. In addition, special thanks go out to the school’s HOD (PE and CCA), Mr Azuan Tan, for his invaluable guidance and encouragement all this while. Lastly, but not the least, many thanks to the rest of the staff for their kind understanding and time in helping the girls in academic management during the hectic competitive season, and for rooting for the girls.

The competitive season for the Floorball 'B' Girls may have come to an end for this year, but their journey to higher heights is only just beginning, and this achievement would not have been possible without the support of all East Springians. The ES Floorball teams will continue to strive for excellence in the future and we look forward to growing together as a cohesive family.

Young Gentlemen from ESSS

20 March 2012

I would like to commend the wonderful behaviour of a group of students from your school.

On 16 March, i boarded a east-bound train which was quite crowded. Three of your students who were seated immediately stood up to offer me their seats the moment I went near them.

This was initiated by one of the boys who shouted "Offer your seats!" I later learned his name was Faiz from 2N1and another boy was Izzaq from 2N2 . They were with their team-mates after a softball match. Though they had lost the match, they were still in high spirits and told me that winning or losing in a game is not as important as having good sportsmanship.

The gentlemanly behaviour of Faiz and his friend put to shame many young able-bodied adults who nonchalantly occupy seats reserved for the elderly on trains.

Currently the MOE is stepping up on character-building in our students. It would be good if you could highlight this incident at the school assembly. This would not only spur on Faiz and his friends to continue with their exemplary behaviour but hopefully inspire the rest of the school population to do likewise.

I congratulate your school and the parents of these boys on producing such caring and helpful young gentlemen.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Yeo S L

Innovation, Design and Engineering Challenge (IDE)

23 August 2011

On Sat, 6th August 2011, five students from Science Talent Management Programme participated in the Innovation, Design and Engineering Challenge (IDE) organised by Null Space Singapore and Dunman Secondary School. The IDE is a 5-day challenge for lower secondary school students to design, innovate and construct a mechanical solution to a problem posed.

This year, the participants were required to create a robot or vehicle that could go through a few obstacles such as crossing a bridge over a river, pressing levers and collecting iron screws from inside the river while avoiding hitting “nuclear waste containers”.

East Spring Secondary was represented by Kenny Sung, Desmond Lim, Koh Jin Hong and Muhammad Safwan. It was a challenge for the young team as they lack the expertise and knowledge to construct a working robot within 5 days. With some brainstorming and guidance from the teacher i/cs and some science teachers, they decided to design the robot by improvising on a remote-controlled racing car.

Ten schools competed in the IDE challenge; amongst them were Raffles Institution, Raffles Girls School, Tampines Secondary School, Christchurch Secondary School. Each of the design put up by the school was unique and had their own advantage in meeting the challenge. Despite the tough competitors, East Spring Sec managed to clinch the fifth position.

The team agreed that the journey has been very enriching and they definitely have learnt and benefited a lot especially by looking at the unique designs put up by the other schools. If given another opportunity they would like to participate again and come up with a more innovative and unique design of their own.

East Spring IDE team would like to thank Mrs Jalil, Mrs Mohinder, Miss Sakinah, teachers and all parents who have supported and contributed in the team’s achievement.

The above write-up is done by Mdm Nurbadriah and Ms Siti Aishah (Teachers in-charge of Science Talent Management Programme).

Tan Kah Kee Young Inventor's Award

05 August 2011

East Spring D&T students achieve great heights in the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventor's Award this year. A total of 5 students were short listed for the awards for their innovative D&T projects. Out of these 5, Sim Wei Jie from 4E3(2010) won the Commendation Award and Chan Min Yu from 4E3(2010) won the Encouragement Award.

Wei Jie's project *360 degrees Apparel* showed how the display of clothes in departmental stores can be revolutionized with a modular display that can allow shoppers to reserve the apparel that they have in mind.

Min Yu's project Rock a bye Baby combined a conventional rocking chair and a high chair to form a new type of baby furniture with both functions.

In addition, the school was also presented with the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventor's School Award for our outstanding participation and quality entries.

One of our students, *Danielle Mariz Rosario Arado from 2E3 *also clinched the Creative Aesthetic Award for D&T Awards this year with her project *Crocodile Dundee*. D&T awards are awarded to students with innovative D&T projects and creative design. This is certainly recognizing the creative and design-oriented curriculum in place in the school.

Water Monitoring Day on 28 July

 03 August 2011

East Spring Sec celebrated Water Monitoring Day on 28 July - a project in collaboration with Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Water Environment Federation (WEF) and International Water Association (IWA).

The Science Talent Management Group (STMG) students were trained by Ngee Ann Poly (School of Engineering, Building and Environment) in May, to use a water test kit in measuring 4 key water parameters: dissolved oxygen (DO), pH (acidity), turbidity (clarity) and temperature. These STMG students then went on to transfer their learning to the Environment Ambassadors and Environment Club members. Since then, the students have been monitoring the waters of Sungei Api-Api with dataloggers and the water test kit. After the measurements, the students would submit their results via the World Water Monitoring Day Website to be consolidated with those data collected by schools in other parts of Singapore, so as to provide an overall picture of the water condition in Singapore.

Project GRIN

02 June 2011

We were all grins when we took part in Project GRIN on Sunday morning, 29 May 2011. This was a project that was organised in collaboration with National Environment Agency and Veolia Pte Ltd, where our students went door-to-door to inform the residents in Tampines Central about the new recycling system that will be implemented in July. Instead of the use of fortnightly-distributed recycling bags, every HDB block will soon have one recycling bin, and there is no need for sorting of recyclables anymore - all recyclables shall go into the same recycling bin, and they will be sorted by Veolia at their recycling plants.

Representatives from the Environment Club, Environment Ambassadors and Library Club were chosen to take part in this activity, and the students clearly enjoyed it: those hearty interactions with the residents, the cats, dogs, rabbits and even tortoises that they came across, the fun that they had at the playground while waiting for our return bus, the delicious chicken rice lunch that Veolia kindly sponsored, the goodie bags that contained the limited edition Project GRIN T-shirt... As the students explained to the residents about the upcoming recycling system, they also bonded with each other and made new friends. The facilitators from Veolia could not resist and marvelled at how well-behaved and independent our students were. They were so efficient and enthusiastic in the activity that they took only about three hours to cover nearly 20 blocks of flats in Tampines Central!

This educational outreach was part of our school's effort in contributing to the community - not only did the residents learn from the bits of information that our students imparted, the students also learnt about teamwork, communication and resilience. We really look forward to collaborating with more agencies to create more of such meaningful and memorable experiences for our students!

PAPER CRANE FOLDING EXERCISE

23 May 2011

In the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami disaster, some pupils asked Mr. Neu Wee Teck what East Springians could do for Japan? Whilst raising money was a good cause, the event should also impact the students in terms of learning and their awareness of the event. Hence the idea of paper crane folding was born. Culturally, in Japan, cranes symbolise hope and well wishes. With that, during International Friendship Day, Mr. Neu rolled out this paper crane folding exercise to the Sec. 1, 3 and 4. The students and teachers demonstrated that not only were they resilient in the folding despite the difficult steps, they also showed empathy in the way they folded the cranes- with quiet dignity and determination. Many of the students also folded bags full of cranes and gave to Mr. Neu throughout the following weeks.

On 12th May 2011, Mr. Neu, together with Mr. Jim Teo and Jackson Teo and Daniel Ashraf of 3T1, went to the Japan Embassy to give the container (made by the teachers from the DnT department) full of cranes to Mr. Chiba Hirohisa, Director, Information and Culture at the Japan Embassy.  Mr. Hirohisa thanked the school for their efforts. This exercise showed that both students and teachers are definitely global thinkers and doers!
